HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION COURSES
In the health and physical education course of study students will explore topics related to good health and fitness practices. The range of courses includes topics in health, CPR, competitive sports, and lifetime fitness activities. The goal is to encourage students to achieve maximum personal health and maintain a regimen throughout life.
Health
HEALTH 9 - HL101
Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 9 Health 9 is a course designed to help the students make positive choices with regard to physical, mental, emotional, and social health throughout his/her lifetime. Students will examine lifestyle factors, learn decision making skills, select goals, and make plans to work toward optimum health. The primary focus of this course will be knowledge in the areas of stress and self-esteem, nutrition, medicine and drugs, alcohol, tobacco and other nicotine products, disease prevention, as well as basic CPR/First aid. Required of all ninth graders. ____________________ CPR/FIRST AID - HL301 Prerequisites: Health 9 Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 A $30 lab fee is required for Red Cross fees, materials and certification. Students will study CPR as it relates to emergency first aid for respiratory failure and cardiac arrest in victims of all ages. Topics include rescue breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, care for an obstructed airway, and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Students will study first aid procedures for immediate care of victims of accidents or sudden illnesses. Procedures include assessment of the situation and victim and appropriate action to take if medical aid is delayed or unavailable. Topics include sprains, fractures, bleeding, burns, and electric shock. Students will earn certification in CPR and First Aid. |
Physical Education
Note: All students who receive credit for physical education must be assessed according to the new Ohio State Standards for Physical Education mandated by Senate Bill 210, signed into law in June, 2010.
____________________ PHYSICAL EDUCATION I - PE101 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/4 Grade offered: 9 This program will sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life. The class will aim to provide physical wellness and psychomotor skills that are developed through a variety of activities. Ultimately students will be provided with the skills and knowledge for making informed decisions that will empower them to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle. ____________________ PHYSICAL EDUCATION II - PE201 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/4 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 Students signing up for this course will be exposed to a number of activities that may increase their chances of a physically active lifestyle. Students will participate in a number of recreational activities that may include bowling, golf, cornhole, and table tennis. Students will also be involved in team sports, resistance and cardiovascular training. Physical fitness testing will be required of all students. The major emphasis of this course will be on lifetime fitness. ____________________ WEIGHT TRAINING - PE301 / PE302 Prerequisites: PE I Credits:1/4 Grade offered: * *1st semester is only offered for grades 10, 11, and 12. 2nd semester is for all students. Students electing strength training will be exposed to various resistance programs, training techniques, and fitness principles. Students will be able to design their own program based on classroom experience and their own individual needs. Students electing strength training will be expected to challenge themselves to their maximum ability. This course may be chosen as an option in any year of the high school career. |
