WORLD LANGUAGE COURSES
In the high school world language course of study, students will explore an integration of culture with the languages of French, Spanish, and German. A progressive study of world languages allows students to enjoy developing a variety of cultural, reading, listening, and speaking skills. World language students learn to communicate about themselves and the world around them. World Language classes require a strong base in English grammar structures and a grade of “C” or better in English class.
FRENCH I - WL101
Prerequisites: None Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 French I is an introduction to the fundamentals of the French Language with an emphasis placed upon basic communication skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Class work includes dialogues, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation drills. Students also learn about French culture and history. Use of French in the classroom will be encouraged. ____________________ FRENCH II - WL102 Prerequisites: French I Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 French II further develops the basic fundamentals of communication skills with increased emphasis upon reading comprehension and oral communication. Students will use their acquired skills in dialogues, discussions, oral and written practice, and reading selections. Daily practice in the four skills areas allows students to develop a more extensive command of the language in selected situations. However, students should not expect to achieve language fluency with only two years of study. The student will continue to be exposed to the art, music, literature, and history of France and other French-speaking countries. ____________________ FRENCH II (H) - WL106 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 *French I and teacher recommendation. French II (H) further develops the basic fundamentals of communication skills with increased emphasis upon reading comprehension and oral communication. Students will use their acquired skills in dialogues, discussions, oral and written practice, and reading selections. Daily practice in the four skill areas allows students to develop a more extensive command of the language in selected situations. The student will continue to be exposed to the art, music, literature, and history of France and other French-speaking countries. This course offers more in-depth study and more difficult assignments than French II with the goal of reaching a higher level of language proficiency. ____________________ FRENCH III (H) - WL103 Prerequisites: French I and II Credits: 1 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 French III increases emphasis on those skills begun in French I and II: pronunciation, listening, speaking, reading, writing, sentence structure, advanced grammar, and vocabulary expansion. Materials include short stories, magazine articles, videos, and audio cassettes. Students pre-pare individual and group presentations, write paragraphs, respond to spoken French, and read about life in France and Francophone countries. Career exploration, current events, and the important role of world language study are stressed. ____________________ IB FRENCH IV SL - WL105 Prerequisites: French I, II, and III Credits: 1 Grade offered: 11, 12 *Can be taken for individual IB Course Credit French IV extends the student’s proficiency in the skills of the previous years through the study of novels, plays, magazines, videos and guest speakers. This class includes grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, cultural study, projects, reports, and individual and group presentations. Emphasis is on the relevance and importance of world language study for careers and personal growth. This class follows the IB SL curriculum. ____________________ AP FRENCH V / IB FRENCH V HL - WL104 Prerequisites: French I, II, and III, IV Credits: 1 Grade offered: 12 *Can be taken for individual IB Course Credit French V extends the student’s proficiency in the skills of the previous three years through novels, plays, magazines, videos, and guest speakers. This class includes grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, cultural study, projects, reports, and individual and group presentations. Emphasis is on the relevance and importance of world language study for careers and personal growth. Particular additional focus is placed on the AP and IB HL curricula. ____________________ GERMAN I - WL301 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 German I is an introduction to the fundamentals of the German language, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Communication in German through the four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening is emphasized. Students will be exposed to the culture of the Germanic speaking world through the use of films, tapes, and other appropriate audiovisual resources. Daily drill and practice in oral expression, as well as the study of simple German texts, help the student build a strong vocabulary, develop fluency in conversation, and lead to easier understanding of written German and its idioms. ____________________ GERMAN II - WL302 Prerequisites: German I Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 German II continues the German language sequence with an increased emphasis upon reading comprehension and accurate translation skills from English to German. Daily practice in the four skill areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening allows students to develop a more extensive command of the language in selected situations. However, students should not expect to achieve language fluency with only two years of study. Students continue study of the history and cultural foundations of Germanic speaking nations. ____________________ GERMAN II (H) WL305 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 *German II and teacher recommendation. German II (H) continues the German language sequence with an increased emphasis upon reading comprehension and accurate translation skills from English to German. Daily practice in the four skill areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening allows students to develop a more extensive command of the language in selected situations. Students continue study of the history and cultural foundations of Germanic nations. This course offers more in-depth study and more difficult assignments than German II with the goal of reaching a higher level of language proficiency. ____________________ GERMAN III (H) - WL303 Prerequisites: German I and II Credits: 1 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 German III is an intensive study of the German language, building upon skills developed in German I and II. German will be used extensively by the students and the teacher. Readings will be based upon current magazines, journals and newspapers, as well as novels and other related literature. ____________________ IB GERMAN IV S L - WL306 Prerequisites: German I, II and III Credits: 1 Grade offered: 11, 12 *Can be taken for individual IB Course Credit German IV extends the student’s proficiency in the skills of the previous years through the study of novels, plays, magazines, videos and guest speakers. This class includes grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, cultural study, projects, reports, and individual and group presentations. GREEK AND LATIN DERIVATIVES - WL401
Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 This class is worth 1/2 an elective credit. Suggested for any college bound student. This course does not conflict with the traditional Latin language course, but is designed to awaken an interest in words and a curiosity about their composition and history. The student will become familiar with those Greek and Latin roots which are clues to the meanings of hundreds of unknown or imperfectly understood English words. This course provides students with an excellent technique for vocabulary building, especially in preparation for taking SAT and ACT tests. ____________________ GREEK AND ROMAN MYTHOLOGY - WL402 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 This class is worth 1/2 an elective credit. Recommended for students who desire a good background for mythological references in literature. This class is designed to introduce students to the great myths of Greece and Rome, to aspects of myth-making, and to mythological references encountered in day-to-day reading. Students will study all major gods, goddesses, and heroes in depth. Students should contact their counselor. ____________________ SPANISH I - WL201 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Spanish I is an introduction to the fundamentals of the Spanish language, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Daily practice allows the student to develop some command of the language in selected situations, including personal identification, courtesy expressions, school and leisure activities, telling time, daily routines, and basic weather expressions. The student is also exposed to the geography, history, culture, and civilization of the Spanish-speaking world. ____________________ SPANISH II - WL202 Prerequisites: Spanish I Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I, providing the student with further study and practice in the fundamentals of Spanish vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Daily practice in the four skill areas allows students to develop a more extensive command of the language in selected situations. However, students should not expect to achieve fluency with only two years of study. Further study of the geography, history, culture, and civilization of the Spanish speaking world will be an important part of classroom activities. ____________________ SPANISH II (H) - WL205 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 *Spanish I and teacher recommendation. Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I, providing the student with further study and practice in the fundamentals of Spanish vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar. Daily practice in the four skill areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing allows students to develop a more extensive command of the language in selected situations. Further study of the geography, history, culture, and civilization of the Spanish-speaking world will be an important part of classroom activities. This course offers more in-depth study and more difficult assignments than Spanish II with the goal of reaching a higher level of language proficiency. ____________________ SPANISH III(H) - WL203 Prerequisites: Spanish I & II Credits: 1 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 Spanish III is designed to further develop the skills learned in Spanish I and II. Spanish will be used extensively by the students and the teacher. The emphasis will be on increasing language facility. Reading activities will be based on longer stories by well-known Hispanic authors. Emphasis will be placed on grammar and vocabulary development, composition, conversation, self-expression, and accurate translation. Hispanic history, geography, and culture are important parts of the curriculum. ____________________ IB SPANISH IV S L - WL206 Prerequisites: Spanish I, II, & III Credits: 1 Grade offered: 11, 12 *Can be taken for individual IB Course Credit Spanish IV extends the student’s proficiency in the skills of the previous years through the study of novels, plays, magazines, videos and guest speakers.
