The high school art course of study will explore the elements and principles of design, the techniques used in producing artwork, and the process of creative problem solving. State content standards will be addressed including the study of art history. Skills and concepts essential to artistic development will be presented sequentially.

Foundations of Art - AR101
Prerequisite: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This is an introductory course that will explore various topics and media in art. Exercises will include basic drawing and painting techniques, media exploration including ceramics, printmaking, fibers, and photography. This course is intended to provide an entryway into more media specific classes. Visual journals will be kept in class. ____________________ Ceramics I - AR115 Prerequisite: Foundations of Art Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course provides a comprehensive study in hand-built clay construction, basic wheel throwing techniques, surface decoration and varied glazing techniques. Students will look at the chemistry of clay and glazes, the history of ceramics and explore contemporary artists working in clay. Visual journals will be kept in class. ____________________ Ceramics II - AR215 Prerequisite: Ceramics I Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 10, 11,12 This course builds upon the skills and experiences in Ceramics I. It is geared towards the student who enjoys working with clay and is seeking personal and artistic growth in a setting of like-minded students working at a high level. The combination of craftsmanship and personal expression will be a focus. VIsual journals will be kept in class. ____________________ Drawing and Painting - AR120 Prerequisite: Foundations of Art Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course further develops studio skills in drawing, painting, and design that were introduced in Foundations of Art. Students will strengthen their drawing skills by drawing from observation and reference images while using a variety of media including pencil, colored pencil, and charcoal. Painting techniques will also be covered as students further develop their watercolor and acrylic painting abilities. Visual journals will be kept along with course portfolios. ____________________ Printmaking - AR130 Prerequisite: Foundations of Art Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11,12 This is an introductory course exploring different printmaking processes including relief printing, monotype, screenprinting, intaglio, and collograph. Students will learn the basics of printmaking and gain skills and confidence making printed images. Students will explore artists and the history and tradition of printmaking. Visual journals will be kept along with course portfolios. ____________________ Photography - AR140 Prerequisite: Foundations of Art Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11,12 Fee: $30 This is a basic exploration of darkroom and digital photography. Students will explore photographic techniques and processes to gain skills in creating a personal body of work. The history of photography will be discussed and visual journals will be used. |
AP2D Design/Drawing - AR511
Prerequisites: Previous art class or permission of the teacher. Credits: 1 Grades offered: 11, 12 This is an advanced placement course with emphasis on creating a fine art portfolio using a variety of techniques and media. Related artists will be studied. Assessment follows AP requirements and the class will include individual and group critiques. A portfolio must be submitted and receive a passing score from AP to earn possible college credit. ____________________ ART PHOTO CCP - AR305 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 *Prerequisites: Score of 18 or higher on ACT Reading OR pass the Wright State University writing assessment, 2.0 or higher GPA, and an accepted application to the CCP art program at WSU In this year-long college photography course, students will complete six projects exploring the use of film cameras and printing in the darkroom. Emphasis will be on developing an independent portfolio of work and artistic style, including artist statement and supporting research paper. Outstanding technical skill, artistic content, time management, and experimentation will be essential to student success. ____________________ IB VISUAL ART - YR 1 (11TH) AR610 IB VISUAL ART - YR 2 (12TH) AR710 Prerequisites:* Credits: 1 Grades offered: 11, 12 * Can be taken for individual IB Course Credit. * A previous high school art class or permission of the teacher. IB Visual Art uses a holistic approach to the study of art that includes research, critical analysis, exploration of traditional and contemporary art making processes and contexts, curatorial practice and exhibition. IB Visual Art can be taken for up to two years. The course is divided into 3 main areas, “Comparative Study”, ”Process Portfolio” and “Exhibition” where students present an exhibition of resolved artworks of their choosing with accompanying exhibition texts. |
