MUSIC EDUCATION COURSES
The mission of the Kettering City Schools District Music Department, in partnership with the family and community, is to provide opportunities for students to gain an appreciation of music as an art form and to foster the desire for lifelong participation in musical activities. Music classes are available through both student selection and audition as indicated in course descriptions below. In performance groups, music of all types and periods is studied and performed at school, in the community, and in district and state large group adjudicated festivals. Students will be placed in the appropriate section after all auditions have been completed.

Choirs
SYMPHONIC CHORALE - CH100
Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 Symphonic Chorale, the premier concert choir at Fairmont High School, is composed of mixed voices, divided into Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass, and is for students capable of performing the most challenging choral literature. Students selected for enrollment in Symphonic Chorale are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled events. ____________________ MEN’S CHORUS & WOMEN’S CHORUSES - CH100 Prerequisite: None Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus are non-auditioned choirs open to all male and female students grades 9-12. This group focuses on the basics of singing through a wide variety of styles, including barbershop, jazz, gospel, popular and classical. These choruses perform at KFHS choir concerts and at OMEA large group contest. An advanced section of Women’s Chorus will be open by audition to students in. grades 10-12. Bands
WIND SYMPHONY - BA100
Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 Wind Symphony is the premier concert band at Fairmont High School and is for students capable of performing the most challenging band literature. Students selected for enrollment in Wind Symphony are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled events. ____________________ SYMPHONIC BAND - BA100 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 Symphonic Band is an advanced ensemble and is for students capable of performing challenging band literature. Students selected for enrollment in Symphonic Band are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled events. ____________________ CONCERT BANDS - BA100 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 *Students who sign up for band are automatically enrolled in this group; however, all students must have successful prior year band experience in Kettering City Schools or pass a new student placement audition. Students electing enrollment in Concert Band are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled events. |
Orchestras
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA - OR100
Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Symphony Orchestra is the premier concert orchestra at Fairmont High School and is for students capable of performing the most challenging orchestra literature. The Full Orchestra is composed of members of the Symphony Orchestra and wind and percussion performers from the Wind Symphony. Students selected for enrollment in Symphony Orchestra are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled events. ____________________ PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA - OR100 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Philharmonia Orchestra is an advanced ensemble and is for students capable of performing challenging orchestra literature. Students selected for enrollment in Philharmonia Orchestra are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled events. ____________________ CONCERT ORCHESTRAS - OR100 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 *Students who sign up for orchestra are automatically enrolled in this group; however, all students must have successful prior year orchestra experience in Kettering City Schools or pass a new student placement audition. IB MUSIC - YR 1 (11TH) - MU610
IB MUSIC - YR 2 (12TH) - MU710 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 11, 12 * Can be taken for individual IB Course Credit * Must be in a music ensemble. IB Music -Year 1 will focus on Music History, Music Theory and Analytical Listening. Students will explore the evolution of music throughout the different time periods as well as develop analytical listening skills for musical comparison. Students will gain a basic knowledge of music theory and its applications to part writing. IB Music - Year 2 is required to be eligible for the IB Diploma or Certificate for music. During the second year, students will focus on World Music, Score Analysis and Solo or Group Performance. The bulk of the year will be spent preparing for the Listening Paper and Musical Investigation. ____________________ MUSIC THEORY - MU401 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 *Must be in a music ensemble. Students will study key signatures, triads, chord progressions, basic part-writing, and score analysis of various musical styles. Students will also study basic arranging and transpositions of instruments found in various ensembles. This course is part of the College Credit Plus program. |
