ALGEBRA I - (Co-taught) - MA121
Grade offered: 9 Credits: 1 Math Prerequisites: * (This is a college-prep course) EOC tested subject *All incoming freshmen will take the college prep Algebra 1 course unless they were placed in a Resource Room setting by their 8th-grade IEP team. Not all of these classes will be co-taught. The foundation for future math courses in the college prep program. Topics include Linear Equations/Inequalities, Linear Functions, Exponential Functions, Quadratic Functions and Application of Statistics. _______________________ INTRODUCTION TO LIT. & COMP - (Co-taught) - EN101 Grade offered: 9 Credits: 1 English Prerequisites: * (This is a college prep course) *All incoming freshmen will take the college prep Intro to Lit. & Comp course, unless they were placed in a Resource Room setting by their 8th grade IEP team. Not all of these classes will be co-taught. The goals for this course are to gain a greater appreciation of literature and develop skills to interpret it, become active thinkers and readers, improve writing skills, and build confidence for their success in Survey of Literature and Composition (college prep sophomore class). There will be an emphasis on language skills in writing, reading, listening, vocabulary and speaking. _______________________ ENGLISH 10 (Co-Taught) - EN200 Grade offered: 10 Credits: 1 English Prerequisites: * EOC tested subject *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data and recommendations by the English teacher. Not all of these classes will be co-taught. English 10 provides extra instruction in reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills. This class will prepare students for success on the reading and writing portions of the state-mandated tests. (This is not a college prep class) _______________________ ENGLISH 11 (Co-Taught) - EN300 Grade offered: 11 Credits: 1 English Prerequisites: * ACT testing junior year *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data and recommendations by the English teacher. English 11 focuses on building skills in reading, vocabulary, and writing. Readings are by American authors. (This is not a college prep class) _______________________ ENGLISH 12 (Co-Taught) - EN400 Grader offered: 12 Credits: 1 English Prerequisites: * *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data and recommendations by the English teacher. Not all of these classes will be co-taught. English 12 is a course designed for seniors to develop an appreciation for various types of literature while strengthening skills in a combination of four different areas: usage, vocabulary, reading, and writing. Students will use Daily Oral Language exercises to review and learn common grammatical errors in everyday speech and writing. In addition, students will use the online Membean Program to improve their vocabulary; the program includes weekly training practice and a formal assessment every two to three weeks. Reading materials will include articles, drama, poetry, and novels. Students will improve their writing skills by completing short informal and technical writing exercises, as well as, formal assignments of paragraphs, essays, a career passport, and a research project which includes a presentation. (This is not a college prep class) _______________________ RR ENGLISH 9 - SL101 Grade Offered: 9 Credits: 1 English Prerequisite: * *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data, applicable IEP, recommendations by the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current 8th grade English teacher. Students will improve basic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Basic reading and writing skills will be improved by reading a variety of literary, informational and short stories throughout the year. Hero's, The Watsons Go To Birmingham, and The Contender are just a few books read as a class. While reading these novels, students complete comprehension and writing assignments to strengthen their overall English abilities. Once a semester (twice a year), students will choose an independent reading book to read and complete a project independently. This summative assessment, allows students to put all skills learned throughout the year into one project. In addition, students will complete short informal writing exercises, as well as formal assignments. Students will complete weekly writing assignments and will be expected to write multi paragraph essays by the end of the year. Plus, students will learn and apply literary terms, so they can discuss literature within an academic English class setting. In addition, Membean is our online vocabulary program. Here, the students work on their vocabulary level through three, 15-minute sessions per week. We then have a quiz on their Membean words once every 4 to 6 weeks. Another online tool that is incorporated weekly is IXL, this platform is used to help accelerate student learning by helping to address gaps and provide opportunities for acceleration beyond grade level. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR ENGLISH 10 - SL201 Grade Offered: 10 Credits: 1 English Prerequisite: * EOC tested subject *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data, applicable IEP, recommendations by the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current 9th-grade English teacher. English 10 uses a modified curriculum to provide direct instruction and intervention for reading and writing skills needed for success at the high school level for passage of state-mandated tests. Basic grade-level informational and literary texts are introduced to teach skills such as correctly answering a variety of comprehension questions about a text, citing textual evidence to support answers and writing mechanics. Students will take the ELA 2 End of Course Exam this year. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR ENGLISH 11 - SL301 Grade Offered: 11 Credits: 1 English Prerequisite: * ACT testing junior year *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data, applicable IEP, recommendations by the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current 10th-grade English teacher. Resource Room English 11 provides students with high-interest reading using periodicals and novels. Students sharpen reading comprehension and vocabulary skills and learn to identify literary elements. Course content includes short nonfiction articles, debates, and read-aloud plays. Novels will develop cultural literacy by using well-known literature. In class, students will also work on ACT test prep to prepare them for the testing they will participate in during their junior year. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR ENGLISH 12 - SL401 Grade Offered: 12 Credits: 1 English Prerequisite: * *Course eligibility is determined by using current testing data, applicable IEP, recommendations by the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current 11th-grade English teacher. RR English 12 provides a continuation of high-interest reading using short stories and text selections from novels appropriate for the senior curriculum. Students focus on more complex writing, including the completion of senior passport documents. They focus on functional reading and writing skills for transition to work and independent living (e.g., resumes, basic job applications, college/program training application processes, rental applications, credit card agreements, etc.). (This is not a college prep course.) _______________________ RR GISL (Guided Independent Study of Lit.) - SB509 Grade Offered: 10, 11, 12 Credits: ½ Prerequisite: * Not a freshman-level course *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data, the current IEP, and the recommendation of the counselor and Intervention Specialist. GISL (Guided Independent Study of Literature) is directed at grades 10, 11, and 12, and it provides students with the opportunity to explore the literary elements of short stories, popular texts, grade-appropriate literary texts, as well as poetry. Students can select one text of their choice (that is school-appropriate) and respond to literal & inferential text-based questions by citing textual evidence. They will focus on a text’s character development, figurative language, and plot development as well as vocabulary used in context. (This is not a college prep course.) _______________________ RR WORLD HISTORY - SL106 Grade Offered: 9 Credits: 1 Social Studies Prerequisite: * *Course eligibility is determined by an applicable IEP, recommendation of the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current social studies teacher. The intention of this course is to introduce and build a foundation in concepts to be covered in RR US History and RR US Government. In relation to US History, the course examines industrialization, nationalism, imperialism, WWI, totalitarianism, WWII, the Cold War, and the developing world. In regard to RR US Government, the course will take an in-depth look at the Enlightenment philosophers, their ideas, and their impact on the US Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, and other founding documents of the United States. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR U.S. HISTORY - SL104 Grade Offered: 10 Credits: 1 Social Studies Prerequisite: World History EOC tested subject *Course eligibility is determined by an applicable IEP, recommendation of the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current social studies teacher. The primary focus of this course is to examine the events, people, and ideas of the history of the United States of America from 1877 to the present. Connections will be made between events in America and around the world. Topics students will explore in this class include westward expansion, Native American life, the rise of industry and labor, the Progressive Era, the rise of the U.S. as a world power, World War I, the Roaring Twenties, The Great Depression, World War II, Atomic Era and Cold War, Korean War, Civil Rights, Vietnam War, the women’s movement, and contemporary life in America and the world. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR U.S. GOVERNMENT (Full Year) - SL204 Grade Offered: 11 Credits: 1 Social Studies Prerequisites: US History EOC tested subject *Course eligibility is determined by an applicable IEP, recommendations by the counselor, and Intervention Specialist. Material covered will include the importance of being a well-informed citizen. The course will review the function, structure and process of local, state and national governments. Units of study will include constitutional foundation and philosophy, constitutional amendments, political parties and elections, civil rights, political socialization, the Presidency and the three branches of government. RR Math 9 - SL102

This course is designed to provide instruction in the area of Algebra I and prepare students to take the end-of-year Algebra I assessment. It is a modified curriculum based on state standards and a reflection of the Algebra I class. Desmos, an online graphing calculator, is heavily used as a tool designed to increase students’ access to the curriculum. In conjunction with the grade-level curriculum, ALEKS (an online math program), is used to provide an individualized intervention plan for each student. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR MATH 10 - SL202 Grade Offered: 10 Credits: 1 Math Prerequisite: * *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data, applicable IEP, recommendation of the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current math teacher. This course is primarily based on the Algebra I curriculum. This course will focus on enhancing and building upon the basic algebra skills learned previously. Students will learn to simplify algebraic expressions, write and solve equations, and investigate functions and their graphs. The Algebra skills are modeled in class, and then the students work collaboratively on many practice problems before they demonstrate their understanding through classwork sets, quizzes and tests. It is a modified curriculum based on state standards and a reflection of the Algebra I class. This course will cover foundational geometry, percent application, proportional reasoning, and real-world application of mathematical concepts. Foundational geometry includes circle basics, area and perimeter of irregular shapes, and the Pythagorean Theorem. A review of Algebra basics is also integrated into the course. Proportional reasoning and percent application include unit rate, comparison of units, tax, tip, and discounts. Desmos, an online graphing calculator, is heavily used as a tool designed to increase students’ access to the curriculum. In conjunction with the grade-level curriculum, ALEKS (an online math program), is used to provide an individualized intervention plan for each student. Students will take the Ohio End of Crouse Integrated Math II Test. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR MATH 12 - SL402 Grade Offered: 12 Credits: 1 Math Prerequisite: * *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data, applicable IEP, recommendation of the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current math teacher. This course focuses on transitioning students to the world of work and independent living. Students will apply math skills in areas of employment pay scales, payment modes, time management, and other math concepts of employment. Transitional math concepts are also applied in daily life scenarios to develop skills in comparative shopping, sales tax determination, automobile purchasing/leasing, apartment leasing, insurance rates/premiums, budgeting and banking, loans and interest, and how to monitor credit and keep it secure. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR PHYSICAL SCIENCE 9 - SL103 Grade Offered: 9 Credits: 1 Science Prerequisite: * *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data, applicable IEP, recommendation of the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current science teacher. This course will include topics such as branches of science, the metric system, matter, balancing equations, motion and forces, energy and electricity, and space and the universe per national science standards. Students will build skills using models, make observations, experience lab opportunities, and read charts and graphs while increasing their knowledge of the world around them. Students should know basic math operations and have calculator skills. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR Life Science 10 (Biology) - SL203 Grade Offered: 10 Credits: 1 Science Prerequisite: * EOC tested subject *Course eligibility is determined by current testing data, the current IEP, and the recommendation of the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current Science teacher. This course will cover topics including Genetics and heredity, evolution, natural selection, ecosystems, animals and their structures, and plant structures. Students will have the opportunity to build skills through independent research of related topics, making models, using microscopes, and making observations. They will participate in both lab activities and student-led activities with teacher guidance to develop independent learning styles. This course is designed to prepare students for passage of the Ohio AIR Test - Biology. (This is not a college prep course) _______________________ RR Science 11- SL303 Grade Offered: 11, 12 Credits: 1 Science Prerequisite: * This course will be offered to Juniors and Seniors as an alternating course. Environmental Science was taught in the 2023-2024 school year so Catastrophic Science will be taught in the 2024-2025 school year. *Current testing data, the current IEP, and the recommendation of the counselor, Intervention Specialist, and current Science teacher determine course eligibility. (Environmental Science) - This course offers hands-on activities and labs designed to promote independence and problem-solving skills through data collection and research. Students will study natural resources and their ties to the ecosystem. They will study how natural catastrophic events affect populations and what humans can do to plan for or prevent these events. They will also study ecosystems, populations, waste management, resource planning, pollution, forestry, ethics, sustainable living, and careers. (This is not a college prep course.) *Taught during the 2023-2024 school year. (Catastrophic Science) - This course offers opportunities to study natural disasters as well as epidemic and pandemic events such as germ/virus timelines. Students will also study disasters such as oil spills, forest fires, nuclear power plant disasters, and other human activities and their environmental impact. Survival materials/kits, best practices of survival, and the latest technologies/strategies for the prevention of disasters will also be studied. Students build models, use graphs and tables to gain knowledge and discuss ethics about local and national issues. (This is not a college prep course.) *Will be taught during the 2024-2025 school year. _______________________ RR HEALTH - SL105 Grade Offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Credits: ½ credit health Prerequisite: None *Current testing data, the current IEP, and the recommendation of the counselor and Intervention Specialist determine course eligibility. Health students use a textbook as well as current medical/media information to focus on health and wellness foundations, mental and emotional health, healthy and safe relationships, nutrition and physical activity, drugs, diseases, and disorders, as well as personal care and body systems. Students strengthen interpersonal skills and discuss how they can take control of their own wellness/health in high school. _______________________ Study Skills - SLSKL Grade Offered: 9, 10 Credits: 1 Elective Prerequisite: * *Current testing data, the current IEP, and the recommendation of the counselor and Intervention Specialist determine course eligibility. This class is designed to provide opportunities for students to develop strong work habits that will allow them to be successful in school and after graduation. Students will be monitored and graded on daily planner use, organization of materials, and weekly progress book grades. Students are expected to follow course guidelines and adhere to the established rules so all students can use their time productively. There is both an Intervention Specialist and Paraeducator available daily to provide academic assistance to those students needing it. Students can access Science and Social Studies help at this time with other Intervention Specialists.
