CAREER TECH EDUCATION COURSES
Career Electives
Career Electives are courses intended to provide students with semester-long introductions into various career fields. It is highly recommended that 9th and 10th grade students take the introductory course(s) associated with career tech programs they are interested in applying for.
Fairmont High School, Oakwood High School, and Centerville High School work together to teach students skills that prepare them for specific career areas. Students receive training that will prepare them for college and careers, including 21st Century skills for the workplace. Career Tech courses offer students the opportunity for $3000 scholarships to Sinclair Community College as well as transferable dual enrollment college credit. INTRODUCTION TO SPORTS MEDIA STEM - CT160
Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This introductory course is designed for students who have an interest in sports reporting, sports talk radio, television anchoring, play-by-play announcing or other forms of sports coverage in electronic communication (ex. the Internet). Instruction focuses on the fundamentals of mass communication, broadcasting, and basic media literacy. Writing for electronic media is a key component of this course. Access to Fairmont’s radio and TV production facility provides students with hands-on specialized skills. Work is required outside of class time. ____________________ INTRODUCTION TO ADVANCED MANUFACTURING STEM - CT160 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Intro to Advanced Manufacturing is designed for students wanting to learn more about this growing, high-tech field that employs over 600,000 skilled workers in Ohio alone. Take this course to explore this diverse career field and learn the basics of working hands-on with mills, lathes and other high-tech equipment. ____________________ INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING STEM - CT290 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 A course that develops problem solving skills, while exploring career opportunities in Engineering. Brainstorm ideas, design concepts, create from your mind, and analyze solutions against requirements. Expect to be hands-on with machinery and equipment, and expand methods of communicating ideas through the Engineering Design Process. ____________________ INTRO TO FIRE SCIENCE STEM - CT205 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course is for students interested in learning about the exciting career fields of fire science and emergency medicine. Students will be introduced to the basics of fire safety and fire behavior as well as introduced to the career of firefighting. Introductions to anatomy and basic medical care will also be included in this course. ____________________ INTRO TO BIOTECHNOLOGY STEM - SC231 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Biotechnology is a rapidly growing field in science that includes areas of microbiology, molecular biology, medicine, agriculture, genetics, and research. Students will take one semester to learn micropipetting, lab safety, microbiology, genetic engineering, and DNA analysis through hands-on labs. Intro students will also explore the many career fields that are encompassed by biotechnology. ____________________ INTRODUCTION TO HEALTHCARE CONCEPTS & CAREERS - CT210 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course is designed for students interested in entering a healthcare profession. Students will learn about vital signs, medical terminology, body systems and health occupation professions, along with experiencing CPR training. This hands-on course is highly recommended for anyone entering the medical field, especially for those in grades 9/10 interested in applying for the Allied Health or Medical Assisting Career Tech programs. ____________________ DIGITAL DESIGN BASICS STEM - CT240 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Students will learn how to use the computer to combine art and technology to communicate ideas. The basic principles of working with images and typefaces will be taught to create various products that convey a message for a particular audience. Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign are the primary software programs that will be used in this course. This course is highly recommended for anyone interested in applying to the Digital Design Career Tech program. ____________________ INTRODUCTION TO FILM & SPECIAL EFFECTS PRODUCTION STEM - CT260 prerequisites: None credits: 1/2 grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This introductory course will teach students how to write, plan, shoot, edit and score a film. Students will explore different types of films, including documentary and narrative genres. In addition, student will research and experiment with a variety of special effects techniques. Students will have access to Fairmont’s TV production facility, including cameras, sound, lighting and editing equipment. Students will be working individually and in teams to produce short films. ____________________ FILM PRODUCTION LEVEL II STEM - CT261 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 *Introduction to Film & Special Effects Production This course is for intermediate to advanced level film students. Students enrolled in this course should be interested in completing their own short film during the semester as well as serving as a crew member on other short productions. This course will build on concepts presented in the Intro to Film and Special Effects class. Students will research different types of films, including documentary and narrative genres. In addition, students will research and experiment with a variety of special effects techniques. Students will have access to Fairmont’s TV production facility, including cameras, sound, lighting and editing equipment. Students may enter films in local, regional and national student film competitions. This course could be taken concurrently with Interactive Media. ____________________ INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER PROGRAMMING & TECHNOLOGY STEM - CT270 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Students will be introduced to computer programming using script based languages such as Python and HTML a well as the dual programming language Scratch. Students will also study the development of the digital computer as well as how to install, operate and maintain computer systems. ____________________ SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT MARKETING - CT280 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 Sports and entertainment marketing will help students develop a thorough understanding of the marketing concepts and theories that apply to sports and events. This course covers topics such as sponsorship, distribution, pricing, market research, segmentation, endorsements, event management, marketing plans, and promotion. Students enrolled in this course are eligible to participate in DECA, an association of marketing students, where they will have the opportunity to compete, travel, network, earn scholarships and build their leadership skills. ____________________ ROBOTICS AND FLIGHT STEM - CT292 prerequisites: * credits: 1 grades offered: 10, 11, 12 *Algebra I (Can be scheduled concurrently). Students will be engaged in methods of flight, rocketry, electronics, automation, and robotics with hands on activities and labs to stimulate critical thinking skills, complemented with instruction on theory. Advancement of competency in problem solving methods, design software, sketching, machinery and tooling, 3D printing, soldering, and team building will be major objectives for this class. |
Career Tech Programs
Students in Career Tech Programs have the opportunity to earn college credit through Sinclair Community College and credit granted through Ohio Higher Ed. The Class of 2018 earned over 1800 semester hours of free college credit. This credit earned through Sinclair Community College and/or by state agreement can be transferred to most colleges and universities.
The chart below lists the number of semester hours of college credit that students are capable of earning in each program. ALLIED HEALTH STEM - CT310 / CT410
prerequisites: Algebra I, Biology credits: 2, 3 grades offered: 11, 12 This course is intended for students who are interested in a wide range of healthcare fields, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, dental hygiene, dietetics, respiratory therapy, nursing, or health information management. Students are also provided the opportunity to earn State Tested Nurse Aide (STNA) and phlebotomy industry credentials. Concurrent chemistry course strongly advised during junior year. SC411 Anatomy & Physiology is required to be taken during the senior year.

Prerequisites: None Credits: 3, 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 Automotives is an industry certified ASE program. Junior year is devoted to the study of automotive systems and the design characteristics of different manufacturers. Senior year students can specialize in the system of their choice. Successful seniors can be placed in part-time employment during the senior year. Successful graduates can move directly into the Auto Technology program at Sinclair Community College. Students are eligible to earn ASE Entry Level Certifications.

This highly-engaging, interactive class will train students to use mills, lathes, CNC machines and other modern equipment to best prepare them for the world of work in this in-demand industry. Take advantage of this program to begin your career in the exciting new era of advanced manufacturing today! ____________________ BUSINESS ACADEMY - CT300 / CT400 prerequisites: Algebra I credits: 2, 2 grades offered: 11, 12 The Fairmont Business Academy is a two year program designed for students interested in pursuing a career in the exciting field of Business. The course will provide knowledge in the following areas: foundation of business, entrepreneurship, supply chain management, financial accounting, and much more. Students will also have the opportunity to earn a minimum of 9 college credits. Additionally, students will be able to participate in the DECA student organization. ____________________ BIOTECHNOLOGY STEM - SC331 / SC431 Prerequisites: * Credits: 2, 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 Prereqs: Algebra I and Biology. Concurrent or prior enrollment in chemistry is required. Biotechnology is a rapidly growing field in science that includes areas of microbiology, molecular biology, medicine, agriculture, genetics, and research. Students will use hands-on labs to learn basic lab skills, lab safety, applied math, microbiology, DNA and protein isolation and analysis, and genetic engineering. Biotechnology students will participate in independent research projects. Program completers earn college credit and are eligible to bypass the health science waitlist at Sinclair. Biotechnology students will be prepared to enter the workforce or pursue post-secondary education. The credits earned in this course count toward the science graduation requirement. Students will participate in resume-building HOSA competitions and have the opportunity to apply for internships during their senior year. ____________________ COMPUTER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY STEM - CT370 / CT470 Prerequisites: Algebra I Credits: 2, 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 Join one of the fastest-growing career fields with high-paying, in-demand jobs. Students will study PC applications and software programming, computer operating systems as well as computer hardware and the fundamentals of electronics. Second-year IT students will analyze computer networking applications and network hardware, design and operate technical support systems, receive Microsoft Office Specialist training as well as HTML5/CSS web development. ____________________ CONSTRUCTION TRADES - CT330 / CT430 Prerequisites: None Credits: 3, 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 Algebra I recommended. Students prepare for a job in the construction industry. Areas of study include: blueprint reading, basic construction skills, use of power tools, and project planning. Students can earn certificates including OSHA 30-hour card, NCCER Core, and NCCER Carpentry. Students can earn certificates including OSHA 30-hour card and Career Connections Levels 1-3. ____________________ COSMETOLOGY - CT315 / CT415 Prerequisites: None Credits: 3, 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 The Fairmont Cosmetology program will provide students with the hands-on training required to become a licensed cosmetologist. Students will gain knowledge and practice in hair styling, braiding, manicures, pedicures, facial treatments and more in this 2-year course, including running a fully-operational working salon senior year. Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to take the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology Exam to earn a cosmetology license. ____________________ DIGITAL DESIGN STEM - CT340 / CT440 Prerequisites: Algebra I Credits: 2, 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 The course is for those interested in a number of creative career options including graphic/industrial design, fashion design, and interior design. Digital Design students will acquire the fundamentals of design through use of the Adobe Creative Suite. Students work in a state-of-the-art computer lab utilizing professional software and develop important employment skills through participation in the SkillsUSA student organization. ____________________ FIRE SCIENCE STEM - CT305 / CT405 Prerequisites: Algebra I, Biology Credits: 2 , 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 Fire Science will prepare students interested in pursuing a career as a firefighter or EMT for this exciting, in-demand job field. Students will be guided through instruction in Fire, EMS, technical rescue, and emergency vehicle operation. Upon completion of the course, students will be eligible to test for state firefighter I and II cards as well as the EMT-basic state certification. Students are encouraged to continue their education by transfering into a paramedic program at a post secondary institution of their choice. ____________________ EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION - CT350/ CT450 Prerequisites: None Credits: 2, 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 Early Childhood Education is designed to help students prepare for a career working with children in the fields of education, child care, social work, or health care. Students master the fundamentals of child development, planning and teaching activities, providing a healthy and safe environment, guiding children’s behavior, and management of an early childhood program. All students receive hands-on experience working with children in area preschools, child care centers, and elementary schools. Seniors have the opportunity for paid job placement. Students earn college credit at Sinclair Community College and are eligible for the tech prep scholarship. ____________________ ENGINEERING STEM - CT390 / CT490 Prerequisites: * Credits: 2, 2 Grades offered: 11, 12 *Algebra I. Students will develop skills of engineering design and implementation by creating solutions for competitions, NASA, community assistance, or local businesses. Instruction and hands on activities include robotics, automation, computer aided drafting and manufacturing, electronics, problem solving methods, and data based decision making, as well as fabrication processes such as CNC machining, milling, turning, grinding, and welding. After Graduation, scholarship opportunities are available toward Sinclair, Wright State, and University of Dayton. ____________________ INTERACTIVE MEDIA STEM - CT360 / CT460 Prerequisites: * Credits: 2, 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 All media students will learn the fundamentals of audio and video production and performance, basic graphic design and photography, writing for a variety of media and project management. The emphasis in this hands-on class will be completing real media projects for real audiences and building a portfolio of work to show colleges and employers. In addition, second year students have a chance to earn college credit and participate in internship opportunities. *Algebra 1 (Introduction to Film & Special Effects & Introduction to Sports Media recommended). ____________________ MARKETING COMMUNICATION - CT380 / CT480 MARKETING WORK - CT481 Prerequisites: Algebra I Credits: 1, 2 Grades offered: 11, 12 This two year course focuses on developing young business professionals for careers in marketing, management and professional selling. Students will focus on Digital Marketing the junior year and work morning shifts in our school bookstore, Off the Shelf. Seniors will study Professional & Technical Selling, compete in Tech Prep Showcase and study Marketing Research. Seniors are required to work up to 10 hours per week in a supervised job placement experience. Both juniors and seniors are DECA members, an association of marketing students where they will have the opportunity to compete, travel, network, earn scholarships and build their leadership skills. Seniors with permission may register for Marketing I & II at the same time during the senior year. ____________________ MEDICAL ASSISTING STEM - CT325 / CT425 Prerequisites: * Credits: 2, 3 Grades offered: 11, 12 Begin training for in-demand occupations through acquiring both clinical and administrative healthcare-related skills. Learn skills to work in medical offices, clinics, urgent care centers and in general medicine or specialty practices. Students will be eligible to earn first aid and STNA industry credentials, with seniors able to intern at local healthcare facilities. Other areas explored are sound, props, stage management, and costumes. ____________________ CULINARY RESTAURANT MGMT - CT830 / CT930 prerequisites: None credits: 3,3 grades offered: 11, 12 Restaurant Managers work with the chef deciding on recipes and planning menus.
