FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCE COURSES 

Family and Consumer Sciences courses provide knowledge you can’t LIVE without. These courses teach skills in personal financial management, how to live independently, planning nutritious meals, exploring future career paths, preparing for your own family and more. All students who take an FCS course are able to join Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

CAREER AND COLLEGE READINESS - CT204

What should I do when I graduate from high school? What type of career interests me? How should I prepare for college? Learn, explore, and develop strategies in career and college planning, networking and communication, financial literacy, and coordinating personal and career responsibilities. Throughout the course, you will research occupations, learn techniques of professionalism, explore postsecondary admissions qualifications and tuition costs, and have the opportunity to job shadow in a career of interest. College visit field trip possible. Course fulfills the Financial Literacy State Requirement needed for graduation.

​CHILD DEVELOPMENT - HE214

Do you like children or interested in working with children? Study pregnancy, prenatal growth and responsibilities, nurturing children, as well as their physical, emotional, social and intellectual development. Parenting responsibilities are experienced through the “Real Care Baby III” infant simulator weekend learning experience. Speakers from area agencies, field trips to a local medical facility and child care agencies are used in exploring and understanding the developing child. If you are interested in Health Occupations, Teaching, Human
Services or future parenting know the developmental phases of children in order to set realistic expectations for the child to succeed.

CULINARY FUNDAMENTALS - HE404

Who doesn’t love food? Do you want to learn how to cook but don’t know where to start? If so, this is the class for you! This course emphasizes the fundamental techniques of food preparation such as measuring, reading a recipe, and knowing what equipment and tools to use to get the job done. You will experience first-hand the skills needed to prepare a variety of foods.

Travel the globe through foods! Explore the foods of our world in this course which compares cuisines, ingredients and
preferred cooking methods of various cultures. You will examine the issues and conditions that affect the availability and quality of food in the global market, and apply advanced cooking techniques, including the use of specialty and advanced equipment in the preparation of food dishes. Field trip to explore Jungle Jim’s International Market.

Would you like to improve your well being? You are what you eat! Develop higher level food preparation skills while exploring physical and spiritual wellness to improve your life. Learn stress reducing activities, importance of good food, physical exercise and weight management. Justify prepackaged versus scratch foods, create foods for special
events, adjust and convert recipes and explore careers related to foods and wellness.
INTERIOR DESIGN - HE804
Prerequisites: None

Do you like to rearrange your bedroom? Are you creative with color and love to redecorate? Learn about making housing choices, selection and organization of furnishings, floors and wall coverings in living spaces, kitchens and baths. Apply design principles in a hands-on project designing and decorating your dream home. This course explores the interior design field.

What is love? How do people find a perfect mate? These are questions that this course will help you answer. How do relationships stay healthy and strong through family, friendships or work? Throughout life, relationships are very important. In this class you will map out a family genogram, identify your personality and research how to create a lasting relationship. Areas studied include communication, dimensions of families, healthy vs. unhealthy relationships in business and personal life, dating and marriage, dealing with family crisis, and managing family resources.

Do you have STRESS in your life that you would like to learn to balance? Through this course students will explore the effects of stress on the mind and body, identify stressors, and learn how to practice management and coping skills. Students will identify lifestyle wellness techniques regarding physical exercise and nutrition, as well as mental and emotional life choices and situations. Learning real life skills that can be used well beyond the classroom.

Are you interested in sewing or textile design? Want to fix that favorite pair of jeans? Or turn that old shirt into a cool new bag? Learn to sew and repair useful items with textiles (fabrics).  Learn to care for your clothes, repair and repurpose them and sew items from a pattern. You will explore ethics in the industry, your rights as a consumer, career opportunities and learning how your purchasing decisions impact the community.

Do you love to sew, repurpose fabrics or want to learn how interior textiles go into production? Do you think design or sewing may be a career or hobby for you? Continue to build your sewing skills with more intricate, higher level skill projects. You will have the opportunity to sew items on an industrial machine for use in NASA International Space Station programs!  Learn how to read a pattern and make a garment. Learn how to select appropriate fabrics and compare costs. Explore careers in design, construction and textiles.
