ENGLISH COURSES
In the high school English course of study students will explore building connections among reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The creative levels of students’ exploration is limitless. NOTE: Students who wish to switch from the course they are completing to a course in another level may do so only with the approval of their current English teacher. The teacher should give such approval only after careful consideration and discussion with the students, their parents, their counselors, and the department chair.

This class will prepare students for success on the reading and writing state mandated tests. INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE & COMP - EN101
Prerequisites: None Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9 Students will receive emphasis on language skills in writing, reading, listening, vocabulary and speaking. Contemporary Voices - EN311 Prerequisite: Survey of Literature and Composition or teacher approval Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 11 In this semester course, students will study literature and will continue to develop writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills by exploring contemporary literature offering varied lenses and experiences. ____________________ LITERARY APPRECIATION & COMPOSITION - EN413 Prerequisites: U.S. Lit & Comp Credits: 1 Grade offered: 12 Students will read a variety of literature from classic to contemporary and will write personal, expository, and analytic papers, college essays, and research papers. Students will also work to improve grammar and vocabulary. ____________________ CCP ENGLISH COMPOSITION I - ENG433 Credits: 1 Grade offered: 12 In English Composition I students learn reflective, analytical and argumentative writing strategies, incorporating sources and personal experience. Students will negotiate between public and private rhetorical situations and purposes to achieve academic literacy. They will write multiple drafts using a recursive writing process as they work toward fluency in style and mechanics. In this course, students will earn credit at Sinclair Community College through College Credit Plus and earn credit at Fairmont High School. There will be a cap on the number of seats available for this course. Priority will be given to seniors until the sections are at capacity. All students who do not receive a spot in ENG433, will be placed in their grade level ELA course at FHS. Students who sign up for this course must be approved by Sinclair to take CCP and will enroll in EN1101 at Sinclair CC. Honors Program
FHS PRE AP/IB ENGLISH I - EN102
Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 9 *Recommendation of counselor and 8th grade English teacher. Students will receive emphasis on language skills in writing, reading, listening, vocabulary and speaking. Some of these skills include the writing process; reading of short stories, novels, plays, and poetry; and working on grammar and usage. This honors course offers more in-depth study, more difficult assignments than Intro to Lit & Comp and prepares students for honors sophomore English. ____________________ FHS PRE AP/IB ENGLISH II - EN223 Prerequisites: FHS Pre AP/IB English I Credits: 1 Grade offered: 10 This honors course is for the student who is academically motivated, who appreciates literature, and who has good writing skills. The course explores a chronology of major American writers, their themes and techniques. The students will study vocabulary and grammar and write papers of analysis and persuasion. This honors course prepares students for AP/ IB English Lit and Comp. ____________________ AP LANG AND COMP / IB LITERATURE HL - YR 1- EN323 Prerequisites: FHS Pre AP/IB English II Credits 1 Grade offered: 11 * Can be taken for individual IB Course Credit This course prepares students for the AP Language test and IB assessments by helping them become critical thinkers and skilled readers of prose, both fiction and non-fiction, written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts. As they read, students will consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as the use of figurative language and rhetorical devices. There is a strong focus on literary analysis and timed writing. Students will continue to work on grammar and vocabulary skills and will do preliminary work on their research paper. ____________________ AP LIT AND COMP / IB LITERATURE HL - YR 2 - EN423 Prerequisites: AP LANG AND COMP / IB LITERATURE HL - YR 1 Credits 1 Grade offered: 12 * Can be taken for individual IB Course Credit This course prepares students for the AP test and IB assessments by helping them become critical thinkers and skilled readers of prose, both fiction and non-fiction, written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts; poetry; and drama. Writing assignments will include literary analysis, college essays, a research paper, and other pieces composed for a variety of purposes. Students will study literary and rhetorical devices and strategies and will continue to work on grammar and vocabulary skills. ____________________ IB THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE - YR 1 (11TH) CO710 IB THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE - YR 2 (12TH) CO720 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 per yr Grade offered: 11, 12 *Enrollment in the IB Diploma Program Theory of Knowledge is a two-year course, taken over the junior and senior years. The purpose of the Theory of Knowledge course is to engage the learner in ways of knowing while exploring areas of knowledge. By equipping the student with the tools of inquiry, discernment, analysis and insight, this course aims to lead the student to processes and activities that stimulate independent thinking. The inclusion of five areas of knowledge (natural science, human sciences, history, the arts, and mathematics) shapes the classroom exploration of the themes: Knowledge and the Knower, Knowledge and Indigenous Societies and Knowledge and Technology. This course is taught seminar style and leads to both a formal exhibition and a formal paper. |
COMEDY AND SATIRE - EN524
Prerequisites: * Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 11, 12 * A grade of C or higher in Major American Writers, Survey of Lit & Comp, US Lit, or AP/IB 11 is required. The student will study the theories, concepts, and history of comedy and satire by reading selections and critical essays. The material will include a variety of classic and contemporary works. Essays and creative papers will be required. A major student-designed semester project is also required. ____________________ CREATIVE WRITING - EN574 prerequisites: None credits: 1/2 grades offered: 11,12 Creative Writing is designed to develop writing skills in a creative but directed environment. The student will practice descriptive writing, short stories, poetry, personal essays, and character and plot development. Daily writing is required, and the students will share their work in a group experience. Entering pieces for contests or publication is encouraged. ____________________ GUIDED INDEPENDENT STUDY OF LITERATURE - EN554 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 11, 12 Students will read for personal enjoyment, selecting reading materials under the teacher’s guidance. They will discuss readings with the teacher and write impressions and evaluations of the materials read, using established criteria to make evaluations. ____________________ READING AND WRITING FOR PEACE - EN584 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 10, 11, 12 * Intro to Lit. and Composition, Survey of Lit. and Composition, Pre AP/IB English 1, Pre AP/IB English 2. This course will explore the efforts of peace throughout the world through writers and their works. Using the catalogue of books and authors related to the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, students will explore the writers, their works, and their missions. Through regular discussion, reaction, writing, and research, students will experience the effects of peace both locally, in our nation, and throughout the world. PUBLIC SPEAKING - EN204
Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This course is for the student with little or no practice in oral communication. The course is designed to raise each student’s skill and confidence level speaking before an audience and each student’s critical listening skills. Students will deliver weekly speeches presenting a variety of speeches such as informative, researched, impromptu, demonstration, persuasive, and storytelling. ____________________ COMMUNICATION SKILLS - EN305 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grades offered: 11, 12 Recommended for juniors and seniors, this life skills class is designed to help students learn appropriate conflict management, social etiquette, and effective interpersonal communication and interviewing techniques. JOURNALISM - EN564
Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This class gives students an experience in journalism as they will learn and apply skills in interviewing, writing, editing, photography, and photo editing. Students will also gain valuable experience in planning, teamwork, motivation, creativity, and time management. This course stresses the importance of maintaining democracy in the U.S., the ethics and laws involved in the field, and an exploration of what constitutes news. Guest speakers from the career field will also be incorporated as well as a field trip when appropriate. ____________________ YEARBOOK - CO533 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 *Journalism or adviser approval. Students enrolled in this course are responsible for planning, writing, photographing, editing, and securing part of the financial backing of the yearbook. The yearbook class compiles a pictorial record of the students, faculty, and events of the high school. The students do all writing, editing, photography, and layout in a laboratory environment. Students who have an interest in writing, business, art or photography may apply for the staff. A “B” average or above in English is preferred, and recommendation by teachers is required. All students are required to sell advertising as partial credit for the first and second grading periods. Students will have an opportunity to fulfill this requirement during the summer. Students are encouraged to make this a two-or three-year project. Students are responsible for all aspects of literary magazine production, culminating in the publication of Aerie. THEATRE I - FA101
Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 9, 10, 11, 12 This laboratory course covers the various aspects of theater and performing arts. The primary focus of the course is to develop knowledge of theater as a communication skill and to develop appreciation for theater as an art form. Units of study include introduction to acting and character development, body movement, vocal techniques, improvisation, dramatic analysis, auditioning, fundamentals of play production, and introduction to technical theater. Students are required to see at least one play during the semester. ____________________ THEATRE II - FA102 Prerequisites: Theatre I Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 10, 11, 12 This advanced laboratory course continues the study included in Theatre I. Additional units of study include directing, Shakespearean acting, theatre history and production. Students will write and have the opportunity to stage their own one act play. ____________________ MUSE MACHINE / FINE ARTS INDEPENDENT STUDY - FA623 Prerequisites: None Credits: 1/2 or 1 Grade offered: 11, 12 The Muse Machine Fine Arts Option meets the needs of students who wish to pursue an independent study of the arts. The student may accrue 60 hours (1/2 credit) or 120 hours (1 credit) of fine arts experience. The student must be a member of the Muse Machine, have a GPA of 2.5 or better, and be capable of the demands and responsibilities of independent study. The students will attend performances, exhibitions, lectures, and seminars; keep a log of all arts activities; keep an arts journal and read an arts text. The students must prepare a final project. Application required. ____________________ IB THEATRE - YR 1 (11TH) FA610 IB THEATRE - YR 2 (12TH) FA710 Prerequisites: * Credits: 1/2 Grade offered: 11, 12 * Can be taken for individual IB Course Credit * Theatre I and II or by teacher permission. This course gives participants an in-depth look at theatre through both a historical and cultural perspective. Students research theatre practices and apply their knowledge to their own classroom projects and productions while working with classmates and groups of their peers. Projects will require students to consider both onstage and technical aspects of production. Students should be self-motivated and able to work well on their own and with others. Completion of all four assessments (1 per quarter) will earn students IB course credit. Students do not have to be IB Diploma candidate to take the course. |
